We booked our beds with Lake Tekapo Scenic Resort because we didn't know that YHA Lake Tekapo existed. We didn't regret at all. Lake Tekapo Scenic Resort has motels as well as dormitories and the price of the dorm bed is very reasonable. We stayed at the dorms. The location is fantastic as you can see. The resort is very easy to find. As you enter Lake Tekapo township, you will come to a row of shops. The resort is located behind, in between Run 77 shop and a bakery. See the first picture on the left.
The dorm does not face the lakefront but you just need to come out from the building and this is the scenery you get (picture on right). It is really peaceful here. From here it is about 10 minutes walk to the Church of the Good Shepherd. To get to Mount John, you need to drive. Otherwise just follow any tour from here. The Mount John Earth & Sky shop is just a few steps away from the resort. In fact the petrol station, the supermarket, cafes, restaurants, bakery, souvenir shops are all within a few steps away from the resort.
Parking within the resort's compound is reserved for guests of the motels. If you stay at dorms like us, you have to park off the street which is a few steps away from the resort. If the motels are not full then the resort would allow you to park within the resort's compound.
This is the female dorm. It is very spacious and there are sufficient power points for all of us. By the way, this resort also provides free 50MB wifi access.
The kitchen is very small and incomplete. Pots, glasses, plates, cutleries and kitchen cloths are all limited. They do have free coffee and tea here. Actually when you step into the kitchen and dining room, it looks like an apartment. Kitchen, dining room and the lounge are all located within the same hall. I didn't have many pictures to take here as the place is really simple and basic. There are 4 bathrooms/washrooms as far as I know. They are quite clean.
That's all I have. Fantastic location but simple and basic accommodation for the dormitories. And yes, free wifi. Fantastic!
