Ivory Tower Lodge, Fox Glacier, NZ

There are limited budget accommodation at Fox Glacier compared to Franz Josef. We chose to stay at Fox for convenience sake as our activities are all starting from here.

The parking at Ivory Tower Lodge is also limited. It can only accommodate 4 cars. You can still park off the street and walk a short distance to the hostel if the hostel's car park is full.

This is the hostel close up look and the reception area. Check in was smooth.

The access to our rooms via the kitchen.

Room is dark and a little messy. I guess this can't be helped as it really depends on the kind of roommates that you have. The heater is strong but power points are limited. What I do not like about this hostel is that they do not practice locking the premises. We were told by the reception that there is no key here. This means that anyone can walk in and out of the hostel freely as well as into your rooms! I felt a little uncomfortable knowing that anyone can walk into my room anytime. What's worse is that my bed is next to the door leading to the corridor outside the hostel. See the pictures below. Anyone from the street can always walk into my room and expensive items risked being stolen. Well, crime in Fox Glacier may be very very low but very low doesn't mean that crime is non-existent. Since it is only a one night stay here, I take this as an unique experience.

The corridor outside the rooms is a little narrow.

Bathrooms are ok, considered clean.

The computer room is in th lounge.

A nice cosy fire place in the lounge.

The kitchen is not spacious but it is not small either. When there is a crowd, it can get a little cramp.

This is the dining area besides the kitchen. You can find additional power points at the dining area and lounge to charge your devices if there isn't enough in your room.

Tv/Cinema Room. I thought this place seems a little untidy and dirty. I don't think I want to hang around here.

There is another internet machine outside the kitchen. Not sure if it works or is it just a piece of decoration.

The backyard. It is interesting to see how they recycle the boots and socks.

The sauna.

Well, what do you think of this place? Apart from the keyless system, I think it is still possible to make do with a one night sleep here if all you need is just a bed but given another opportunity to be there, I would choose to stay at Franz Josef next time :-).
