13D12N South NZ - Mount Cook

Day 4 & 5 - Mount Cook

Today we head to Mount Cook. It was a long drive from Fox Glacier to Mount Cook, about 6 hours so we decided to stop by at Wanaka for a rest and have our lunch. From Fox Glacier to Wanaka is 3.5 hours and the journey is a scenic one.

Upon entering Wanaka, you will pass by the Puzzle World on your left.

This is Lake Wanaka and the township of Wanaka.

We bought our lunch from this takeaway shop and crossed the road to Lake Wanaka. It was a cloudy day and there was a light breeze blowing constantly. We sat on a bench enjoying our lunch with views of Lake Wanaka and scenes of kids running, adults walking the dogs and chatting away and the birds flying in circles and in groups. How peaceful can life be at this place.

After lunch, we decided to visit the Puzzling World. It was a rather small place and not as interesting as we expected it to be.

We continued our journey to Mount Cook. The drive to Mount Cook took another 2.5 hours and was even more scenic. We stopped a few times just to take pictures. Trafiic was very low and the drive was pretty easy.

We reached Mount Cook around 6.30pm and it was already slowly getting dark. We stayed two nights at YHA Mount Cook which was a lovely place. That night, we went out just to take some night shots of the mountain.

The next morning we went hiking at some popular trails in Mount Cook. The first trail was Kea Point. It was an easy walk that brings you to a view point overlooking a bluish lake. I am not sure whether that is Lake Pukaki.

After that we continued with Hooker Valley trail. Unfortunately we could not complete the whole trail as part of it was closed for maintenance.

These are the only sections that we managed to cover on the Hooker Valley trail.

After completing two trails in a morning, we had lunch at Sir Edmund Hillary Cafe which is next to the famous Hermitage Hotel.

By the way, petrol in Mount Cook was about NZ$2.32 per litre whereas in other parts of town, the petrol cost was about NZ$2.20 or slightly less.

We rested for awhile after lunch and in the evening, we went for another walk to Tasman Glacier.

This walk requires a little climbing but it is a fairly easy climb as there are steps and rocks that you can use as your footholds.

I hope I have captured the beauty of Mount Cook because this place is really beautiful and a must visit if you come to NZ. Take your time to enjoy Mount Cook and don't rush :-)
