This is Adelaide Hostel in San Francisco, not Australia...yeah, don't be misled by the name. I stayed there for a night. Though the location is central but it is not easy to find. It is not as central as HI Downtown but it is still within walking distance to many places. It is located uphill along Taylor Street and between Geary & Powell Street. Dragging my luggage uphill is really an effort, especially when I just came back from my 4D3N trip to Yosemite, Grand Canyon and Las Vegas. The hostel is in a small dark backlane and can be a little scary to walk back in the dark. This area is a little quiet.
There is no lift in the hostel but good thing the staffs are very friendly and helpful. I was given a room on the 2nd floor and was quite impressed that the guy actually offered to carry my luggage upstairs. Well, even if he didnt, Christine boleh!
That's the corridor leading to my room. The common area is quite large and comfy as you can see and the picture on the right is the kitchen where they serve the free unlimited breakfast. There are 6 computers with free internet access in the common room.
That's my room. I was given a double bed at the bottom. How fortunate. Again, that cost me only about US$20++ dollars per night. The setback is the room does not have any attached bathroom so we have to make use of the common bathroom along the corridors. It's not as clean as HI Downtown but it is not dirty either. The size of the bathrooms and washrooms are also quite small. There is a wash basin in the room though, as you can see from the 2nd picture. Only pillow case and bedsheet is provided. No towels. My roommates were from London. The room is also quite small and enough for one person to walk around. It's a bit squeeze to have 3 persons in the room. Well, the other girl has a semi private room to herself. It is separated from our room with a curtain. That's the 3rd picture. I took that picture while she was away....hehe... There is no room lockers as well but the lockers are available outside the room. It was a little inconvenient and since I have nothing important besides my money, passport and camera, I slept with them under my pillow...camera was beside, not under...just in case you ask.
The blanket is a little old and dusty, but who cares? I slept on the airport floor on an overnight transit plane before, so no big deal with this.
This place is full of Caucasians and I hardly see any Asians around. The hostel provides daily shuttle to Los Angeles for US$45 per person. Airport shuttle is also available and cost US$9 per person. In fact the airport shuttle here costs much cheaper than other place which is between US$11 - US$14. Anyway I think the Bart train is very convenient, cost only US$5.15 and avoid the traffic jam. Let's stick to the Bart train......
If you can't live without internet and like to hang around the young ones, this' the place.
